Chris Stevens is great as cool Kenickie, who often seems a step behind. Hannah Zazzaro is suitably gruff yet a little vulnerable as bad girl Rizzo, who is perhaps the most interesting character in the entire show. The 19-member cast assembled at Totem Pole by director/choreographer Nathaniel Shaw is a talented group mainly drawn from the New York City theater scene, led by Broadway veterans Megan Campanile and Alex Aguilar in the roles of Sandy and Danny. The show also has timeless qualities, especially the impact of peer pressure on youthful behavior and the forever quality of high school friendships, powerfully expressed in the uptempo "We Go Together." "Grease" is very funny and often poignant, driven by a collection of great tunes penned by Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey and John Farrar. Songs like "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" and "Alone at the Drive-in Movie" evoke potent memories of what now seems like a pastel past. For those who grew up during the '50s, "Grease" exerts a strong nostalgic pull. Rebellious young people, to the horror of many adults, were into leather jackets, tight pants, poodle skirts, hot cars and rock 'n' roll from the likes of Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. The fictional Rydell High of 1959 is allegedly in Chicago, but really it could stand in for practically any school in America at the time. Chalk it all up to raging hormones, and in truth there is a raunchy quality to "Grease." There's a lot of pelvic thrusting, sexual references and mild swearing that makes it all seem a lot like, well, high school. The popular 1978 film version, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was able to indulge in cinematic flashbacks to Sandy and Danny's summer of love, but the stage-bound production offers no real back-story, requiring us to simply buy in. If "Grease" has a structural problem - and the musical's enduring popularity in the 43 years since it first hit Broadway suggests it's not a critical one for most audiences - it's that it never really sells the romance between "good girl" Sandy and motor head Danny, or the parallel love story between the brash Rizzo, leader of the Pink Ladies clique, and Kenickie, who along with Danny is part of the greaser gang.
